Why you need to manage your own retirement

You’re on autopilot, but you need to check the speedometer. Your target date is set and the funds have been sold as a kind of autopilot for your 401(k) plans, freeing workers from ever having to look at their retirement accounts.

However  the funds inside of these autopilot accounts may need to be looked at with more intensity.

These funds leave the invetor open to widely various amounts of risk. Also the amount of fees charged to these funds for management vary significantly.

taking control of your retirement needs to be your first priority, secondly simplification of your investments needs to be a primary priority.

Get involved and educated

Should Mom Live for Today or Tomorrow?

After a call from his mother the disheartening feeling of hard work and wishes expressed were for not. When Mom said she was reworking her Mother’s will the feeling of frustration set in.

Knowing that he had put in so much effort to carry out his Grandmothers wishes for her estate after she died. Unfortunately his mother was living in a world where many seniors do.

Do I live for today or plan for tomorrow? The whole restucturing of the trust was so that she could gain access to a lump sum of money vs. a long term income paid from the trust.

Grimm forecast on retiree finances.

I love the news the contradictions are often so plain to see they could get over looked. For example these next two posts are about retirement living and the differences of opinion about money.

For example in this article the writer opens up and states that approximately 60% of retirees will outlive their finances. Resulting in a drastic lifestyle change to keep them financially stable.

The article goes on to say that middle aged Americans need to lower their living expense by 24%. The undeniable results of so many baby boomers retiring in the next few years is causing companies and lawmakers to change the way pension funds are currently administered.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/12/AR2008071200143.html?nav=emailpage

For the second part of our comparison I wanted to share with you the conservative frugal side of the retirement picture. Where living with the lowering of expenses carves out a nice little safe lifestyle with no frills. Sure it’s expected that as you get older your personal consumption habits may change but you are still accustomed to a certain standard of living. This article covers how to save when you haven’t made enough contribution in the first place.

From my calculations the savings plan they have initiated a whole number just over $128,000. And this is to provide a person with a pension and social security payments a subsidized amount to fill in the missing blanks.

It’s great to know that it’s never too late to start saving but who wants to lower their living standards because of financial limitations. Here are some great comparisons going on as to how much savings is needed at the age of retirement.

The benefits of holding off on Social Security

Praise the ones who choose to stay active in the workforce and defer the collection of their benefits from Uncle Sam. Just by delaying your immediate withdrawl from the age of sixty two to the age of sixty eight maybe even seventy four you can increase your benefits.

Who wants to work longer just to gaina few extra measly dollars eery month. This isn’t the life that every one planned for. People are supposed to work twenty to thirty year and that’s it. Take a permanenet vacationand start living the good life.

I find articles like these very disturbing and upsetting to my deepest parts of my soul. The grimm out look for getting older doesn’t fit well with my plans. I have ideas and vacations to accomplish yet. They trake both time and money. You cannot have one without the other it’s not possible.

Until someone finds a better solution than relying upon our government who is over leveraged, under funded, over adminsitered and over taxed. I’ll stick with investing and growing my capital to it’s greatest potential.

Go see why the government has pissed me off again. http://finance.yahoo.com/focus-retirement/article/105365/The-Benefits-of-Holding-Off-on-Social-Security?mod=retirement-post-spending
